Noah Smith’s onstage performance is a diverse collaboration of talented musicians consisting of Noah Smith, Michael Moeller, Drew Phillips, John McGuire and Joe Rico Kline. Based in “the great state of Brown County Ohio” just east of Cincinnati, these guys delight not only local Ohio-Kentucky audiences but regularly record in Nashville, Tennessee. Their latest single, We’re On Fire, is “a story of love, rock-n-roll, and every kid in America’s dream to someday take over the world together”. Noah has always been a huge fan of Paul Simon’s music and his latest project was largely inspired by Paul Simon’s record Graceland. It comes out this August and their fans are excited!
The band started when Noah met Michael Moeller in at an open mic night. A couple of months later, Drew Phillips heard Noah and Michael at the Southgate House Revival in Northern Kentucky and decided to join them. Drew had a good guitarist friend that he convinced to join the group, John McGuire. Last but not least, to keep everyone together in time, they begged Joe Rico to join and we have the group you hear today.
Meet Noah Smith – Songwriter, Singer, Multi-instrumentalist
From our own Brown County, Ohio, Noah Smith grew up in the country surrounded by farms, rivers and woods with Cincinnati just down the road. From his website: “At a very young age Noah knew music would be his life’s path. Cereal bowls turned into drum sets, endless hours of garage band practices, and an insatiable ambition that lyrics and melodies could transcend it all would be early indicators of his life filled with music.” Noah is both an extraordinary songwriter and an energetic performer. His influences include a wide array of musical giants from Paul Simon, Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson, to bands like Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, and Death Cab for Cutie. His original songs are a “capsule of childhood faith, ambition, a little bit of love, God’s good word, and the uphill climb to living an American boys dream”.
Noah graduated from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with a degree in Electronic Media, Music Production and Audio & Video Design. “It was during college while building life experiences, Noah’s songwriting began to flourish. Heart Ache, God’s Blessing, and the devils conviction all found their way into his life and the lyrics he penned.” When asked which is his favorite song, Noah replied “One of my favorite songs we play is a song called I Cant Help Myself. Its a story about falling in love with someone that doesn’t want to fall back in love with you. Its rock n roll at its core but really tells a word for word story of some specific nights in my life”
Noah’s accolades to date include Nominations for Best Live Act, Best Country Artist and Artist of the year 2016 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards.
Meet Michael Moeller – Banjo, Mandolin
Michael grew up in Clermont County, Ohio (Which is between Brown County and Cincinnati ) and lives with his wife Kelsey in Cincinnati. He studied Mechanical Engineering and Design at Cincinnati State but music kept a firm grip on him. His first instrument was the guitar, and he started playing the banjo and mandolin when he was 20. He was influenced by the biggest of radio hits and the deepest of B Side cuts from his dad’s vinyl collection. Michael met Noah at a local dive bar that hosted a songwriters night. They both were impressed by the others songs and decided to start writing together. Michael joined the band in early 2013 contributing harmonies, along with banjo, mandolin, and songwriting.
Meet Drew Phillips – Bass
Drew Phillips grew up in Zanesville, Ohio and studied Telecommunications and Management at Ohio University. His first instrument was guitar and he started playing bass soon after. His earliest influences include KISS, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles. When he first heard Noah and Michael at the Southgate House Revival he thought they had a unique dynamic and was drawn to the energy of their music and performance, similar to the band he grew up coveting. Drew has shared the stage with other touring acts opening for the likes of Shakira, The Doobie Brothers, and more.
Meet John McGuire – Lead Guitar
John grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from the College Conservatory of Music in 2008 and shortly thereafter, started a recording studio J-Mac, which is credited with producing and mixing several artists from the Cincinnati area. John also played guitar for former MCA recording artist July For Kings from 2008 to 2015. He joined Noah’s band in 2015 as they shared mutual friends from the college days and had been in the same music network over the years.
